When did the band first form?
Josie and I have been playing music together for awhile now. New Roman Times have been evolving over that period of time with a different cast of members. Now, we have solid foundation to build the next wave on.
Does the band name hold any particular significance?
It alludes to ancient Roman times. Like "in ancient roman times" ... so it's a historical reference.
First gig: Where was it and how did it go?
In Orlando at the old DIY Records. It was us and Sean Na Na (Sean from Har Mar Superstar). It went pretty well.
Why up and leave Tampa? You got the Buccanneers.
Actually, Josie and I lived in Orlando (just over an hour away). Mike (drummer) lived in Tampa. Two words: Orlando Magic.
What are some differences between INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS and ON THE SLEEVE?
On the Sleeve was a combined effort of the whole band. Each member's parts and ideas help shaped the sound of the record. International Affairs was more of myself and Josie making the decisions.
When did you land in Austin? Why there? Does Huts have the best burgers?
3 years ago. Austin is simply just a great place. Great bands, bars, restaurants, etc. Josie and I are vegetarians, so, Billy's has the best veggie burger. Mike would say for the meat eaters, Casino el Camino for burgers.
How did the New Granada label come to be interested?
We knew Ketih and NG for a while from doing shows in Tampa and mutual friends. He emailed us about something else band related and I was like "do you want to hear the new NRT record?" He heard it and the rest is history.
5 band dream bill?
The Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Pixies
Any interesting tour stories?
I don't think there is dull day on tour. There are too many funny, insane stories to start to list.
Best and worst part about SXSW?
Best - (As an Austin band) being able to sleep in your own bed.
Worst - Getting a cab at 2:15 am.
